Such a great book that comes at the most opportune moment in American history! The politics have shed such a harsh light on immigration and immigrants. It is so refreshing to be able to read a book like this on the positive impacts immigrants have had on our culture and society as a whole.
Being a baseball fan I instantly connected with Barbaro Garbey's story. But, reading through the others was I was delightfully surprised at how much I enjoyed them! I am very pleased with this book and am eager to see the following installments.
The authors of this beginning of an ongoing series have impressive credentials. Democrat Richard Gephardt served as a US Representative from Missouri from 1977 to 2005 and now is President and CEO of the Gephardt Group counseling CEOs during negotiations with labor and being featured in national publications. Idaho author Mark Russell is Co Founder and CEO of Russell Media Corporation and has worked in economic development initiatives both here in the US and internationally. He is passionate about clearly communicating stories and ideas that add to the beauty and diversity of humanity.
In the opening portion of the book the authors state, ‘Our nation is in a new phase, and these are uniquely challenging times. In addition to the normal strains that come with immigration— the struggles of newcomers to learn the language and the customs; the struggles of nationals to understand people who look, act, and think differently— we’ve experienced the pressures of a horrible economy that was triggered by the recession of 2008 and the undeniable impact that terrorism has had on our national psyche. It is understandable that we see our current situation through eyes of trepidation, but this fear cannot replace the nature that is uniquely American. We’ve always been a country that has found a way to welcome and accommodate immigrants. This edition of The American Immigrant features immigrants whose stories connect to some of the hot-button political issues of our day. We’ll learn about immigrants who came as refugees; immigrants who are Muslim; immigrants who arrived poor, but had the determination to make a life for themselves in America; and immigrants
who, at one point, were in the country illegally.’
What follows is a series of stories by new members of America – a group of people who have struggled with the immigration situation and share their experiences with the reader. supposed to be non-fiction, but it comes off as contrived.
as if the stories may be based on some actual people, but the author took so many liberties, that you just don't buy that the author is being genuine and has an ulterior motivation.
reminds me of when he championed the Armenian Genocide cause, but then decided to turn his back on humanity and morality, because he can make a few bucks. gephardt=vermin

"The American Immigrant" is a true testament to the development of our nation. It is so easy, especially in the moment of history we are in right now, to forget that each of these people and families have a story of their journey to the United States. Immigration is the foundation of what built our country and "The American Immigrant" highlights that while giving us interesting, wonderful and personal stories behind the faces of the immigrants. I absolutely love the first edition, The Outsiders, and I can't wait to read more! Well done!
No politics. Just real stories of real people that remind us where we've all come from and inspire us about where we might go.
